Ask A Counsellor

Can you explain the concept of  “ right fit for the job”?

Just as you are looking to find a job that is a match with your skills, values and aspirations, so too are organizations seeking to align their hiring strategies with their overall corporate strategies. Recognizing that hiring managers are trained to screen for fit amongst candidates gives you an advantage when job searching.

· Start by reviewing the company’s website, which can provide valuable clues about the organization’s style, culture, goals and successes.  Pay attention to imagery.  What does the format of the website say about the organization?
· In the absence of a website, review promotional materials and news articles to get a feel for organizational style and culture.
· Talk to current or former employees of the organization; always remember to keep your discussions professional!
· Be an informed consumer.  Try out the organization’s products or services.

In an interview, be prepared to answer the following question…

“What do you know about ABC Company and why do you want to work here?”

Doing some research regarding an organization prior to an interview will help you to align the content of your answers with the goals of the organization.  This will illustrate “fit.”

Your research will also help you to decide whether or not the organization in question is a good fit with your own personal career goals.
